Everyone has those moments that they are most proud of. It could be a moment in high school where you reached a personal milestone. It could be a personal moment when you were particularly proud of yourself. These kinds of moments happen in everyone’s lives and they tend to shape us more than we realize. One of mine occurred in my last year of Boy Scouts.
Being an only child of a single mother meant that the number of people I was close with as a kid was very small. Boy Scouts gave me the feeling of what a large family must feel like at times. I remember my last year as a scout we went on a weeklong canoeing trip in Northern Michigan, and the last night we camped by a large area of still water by the Marquette River, near Ludington, MI. That night we all stayed awake and captured frogs by flashlight for the final breakfast. In the morning, we sautéed frog legs along with the breakfast. That might seem gross to some, but for me, it was a magical moment of kinship and camaraderie that remains very special.
Success, personal fulfillment, and wealth come in all shapes and sizes. What if yours are found in your city’s slums helping the homeless? What if you are called to a third world country?
Choose a recent achievement or milestone of yours that you can celebrate and leverage at your job or career. It could be anything that is important to you, and if you are not in the habit of celebrating your successes this is a very important skill to learn. It could be starting a LinkedIn page, and may be as simple as posting pictures of your latest artwork on social media. Take a moment and bask in the joy and adulation of those closest to you. Give yourself that moment in the sun, unapologetically. Celebrating your milestones and accomplishments is not the same as bragging, and all too often people leave it to others to highlight their accomplishments. The future wants you to celebrate all you do. Perhaps some of this publicity will lead to your next job or future career.
